“Ya can’t go fishin’ in a watermelon patch”, is a line from the song, “You can’t roller skate in a buffalo herd”– made famous by country singer Roger Miller. I was reminded of it while captioning this picture of my fearful girl Annie. “Whadda’ you mean you can’t play soccer in a sunflower patch?”– is what I came up with and it reminded me of a central theme in the relationship I have with my dogs: I control virtually all of their opportunities.
Inclusive of who, what, when, where, how, and why, their whole lives revolve around the opportunities that I allow them. From the ability to chew on shoes carelessly left on the floor, to chasing and retrieving a favorite ball in the back yard, my dogs can only do what I give them the opportunity to do.
So when I find that my dogs are particularly wound up and being obnoxious, usually, I have only myself to blame. With colder weather approaching; please remember that it’s up to us to ensure that our dogs are given opportunities to engage in activities that keep their mind and their bodies sharp. If the opportunity to roller skate in a buffalo herd is not something you want to allow your dog, give them something fun to do that is allowed. As the song suggest “Ya can’t take a shower in a parakeet cage: But you can be happy if you’ve a mind to.”
Please leave us a comment and tell us about some of the wacky and fun things that you and your dogs do to keep yourselves happy and engaged!
