Review

While not all the stories in this book will appeal to all dog lovers, there is something here for dog lovers of every kind. A fantastic collection of essays, stories, short humor pieces, drawings, poems, and cartoons that provide a portal to our relationships with, and attitude towards our dogs both past and present.

With names like John Cheever, Susan Orlean, Roddy Doyle, Ian Frazier, Arthur Miller, John Updike, Roald Dahl, E. B. White, A. J. Liebling, Alexandra Fuller, Jerome Groopman, Jeffrey Toobin, T. Coraghessan Boyle, Ogden Nash, Donald Barthelme, Jonathan Lethem, Mark Strand, Anne Sexton, Cathleen Schine, and even James Thurber, this book provides a broad perspective our doggy obsessions.

As this poem from E.B. White illustrates, attitudes may have changed over the years, but our entanglements have not.

DOG AROUND THE BLOCK

Dog around the block, sniff,
Hydrant sniffing, corner, grating,
Sniffing, always, starting forward,
Backward, dragging, sniffing backward,
Leash at taut, least at dangle,
Leash in people’s feet entangle—
Sniffing dog, apprised of smellings,
Meeting enemies,
Loving old acquaintances, sniff,
Sniffing hydrant for reminders,
Leg against the wall, raise,
Leaving grating, corner greeting,
Chance for meeting, sniff, meeting,
Meeting, telling, news of smelling,
Nose to tail, tail to nose,
Rigid, careful, pose,
Liking, partly liking, hating,
Then another hydrant, grating,
Leash at taut, leash at dangle,
Tangle, sniff, untangle,
Dog around the block, sniff.

—E. B. White

Good luck to you all and have a great week ahead.

Kevin

  1. You always get the most amazing deals. I love it when you have contests like this. What a treasure this book would be for anyone who loves dogs (and the New Yorker – which I also love).

  2. Would love this – can’t wait to read it and it would be a fantastic addition to my dog “stuff”!

  3. My dog has been complaining about the steady diet of pulp fiction he’s been getting. This would make a nice and literate change for us both!

  4. I have read all of those authors, but didn’t realize they wrote missives to dogs! I belong to a poetry group, so would love to have new doggie poems and essays to read to them (I’ve run out of Billy Collins’ work). And one of my previous dogs was named Thurber (after one of the noted authors whose work is in the book, James Thurber). Anyway, thanks for the chance to win, Kevin!

  5. Very pawsome opportunity to win this beautiful book! I would LOVE it!! Paws crossed!! (“”)(“”)
