If your puggle is stinky, it is probably an indication of a health-related problem. It is usually a stinky mouth that causes the dog to smell bad. Check for tooth decays or other mouth infections. It is best to consult a vet when your dog smells of something irregular.
As I said in the beginning, puggles are one of the easiest breeds to feed. But, that is only if you find the right product.
So, how do you do that?
There are many contributing factors. Let’s take a look at each one in detail.
All about the Breed
The first step is to familiarize yourself with the breed you own. Puggles originated in the USA. They are a cross between pug and beagle. This breed has been around since the 1990s.
Puggles come from a background of two very greedy breeds. This explains why puggles are always hungry. They can gain weight very quickly. But the average weight of a healthy puggle ranges between 18 and 30 pounds. Toy-size puggles are smaller so their weight is somewhere around 8 to 17 pounds.
As for their height, they can stay between 13 to 15 inches. Toy-size puggles are even smaller. They are not very big dogs. In fact, they hardly classify as a medium breed.
Puggles can eat for days if you let them. Their greedy nature won’t let them stop. But it is your duty as a pet-parent to administer their food intake. The feeding requirement varies according to the age of the puggle. Every lifestage has a different requirement and so, you need to cater to the needs accordingly.
When your puggle is a puppy, it needs proteins. Amino acids must make up the majority of the meal portion. These are the building blocks that help your puggle’s muscles grow. The first 8 weeks of the puggle’s life are spent with the litter. If you are the caretaker of this litter, you should provide plenty of rice cereal and goat milk to the mother so that it can feed the puppies generously. After week 8, the puggle can be shifted to puppy food. Around 170 calories per day are enough for a dog at this stage.
At 1 year of age, a puggle is considered an adult dog. It’s time to slowly shift to a carbohydrate-rich diet. There’s not much to worry about at this stage except the caloric count. An average adult puggle shouldn’t be given more than 660 calories per day. However, if your dog is more active than a usual pet for whatever reason, up to 1050 calories are fine.
At the age of 9 years, the puggle becomes a senior. Now your dog needs food that is easy to digest. Keep in mind that as the dog ages, its immune system weakens. Therefore, your senior dog will need a lot of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fibers. Most senior dogs aren’t as energetic to their calories should be cut down to 540 per day.
The biggest challenge with puggles is their sensitive digestive system. What’s even harder is that the allergy triggering ingredient is different in every case. Gluten, soy, eggs, and other dairy products are generally what cause allergies in puggles.
The only way to find out for sure what your wrinkly friend is allergic to is an elimination diet. Remove one ingredient at a time from your dog’s meals. You’ll figure out what the culprit ingredient is when the allergic symptoms go away. To double-check, use the ingredient again. If the symptoms come back, you have your answer.
This can be very hectic and time-consuming. Unfortunately, there is no other way around it. But once you figure out the bad ingredient, narrowing down dog foods for your puggle will become much easier.
As cute as this breed is, these dogs are very vulnerable. Here is a rundown of some common health risks and how you can avoid them.
Ingredients: What’s Good and What’s Not?
There aren’t any hard and fast rules for puggles specifically. Anything that you should avoid in dog food should be avoided and the rest is fine. These harmful ingredients include grains and fillers. Simultaneously, the must-have ingredients are vegetables, fruit, and some sort of protein source. If your puggle is allergic to a certain ingredient, avoid that. But other than that, pretty much everything is safe. This is why I say that puggles are very easy to feed!
Wet vs. Dry Food
Both wet and dry food is good for puggles. The rule here is pretty much the same as for any other breed. If your dog is good at keeping itself hydrated, you can lower the amount of wet food and feed more dry food. But if your dog doesn’t drink enough water, wet food becomes necessary.
Whatever the case is, include both types of food in your dog’s meal. How you balance the two is totally dependent on your dog. It is recommended to feed more of wet food to senior dogs since it is easier to digest. Other than that, it is all about your dog’s preference.
